A weekend in Girona

If you're looking for a weekend getaway, we've got the solution for you in this post. As we've already told you, Girona is a city with a lot of history. Start your route getting lost in the Barri Vell, old town, of the city, which is more than 2,000 years old, with very well-preserved cobbled streets. Inside the old quarter you'll find the Call Jueu, the city's Jewish quarter formed by a labyrinth of medieval streets that is truly spectacular. Ideally, you should take a free tour to discover more of the neighbourhood's secrets or those of the whole city.
Another site not to be missed is Girona's Cathedral, one of the city's most emblematic sites. Climb the grand staircase and marvel at the widest Gothic nave in the world.
The colourful houses on the Onyar side of the river are one of the best known sights of the city, they call it "little Florence". Take a stroll from the other side of the river to see the houses until you reach a bridge that will remind you of one of the world's most famous sites, designed by a very famous architect with a French tower in his name... Continue your visit to the Arab baths, the staircase of the church of San Martí, the square of San Feliu, there is so much to see! Although the fun is to walk and get lost in its streets until you find everything we have told you about.

Also, if you're a fan of the tv show Game of Thrones, you can visit the places in the city where the series was filmed. One of the scenes most recreated by fans of the series is that of Aria begging in the streets of Braavos, a scene that was filmed in the gardens behind Girona's Cathedral. In fact, it was the same Cathedral that also represented the Great Sept Baelor, so there you can recreate more epic scenes from the steps.
To finish your route, you can try the ice cream in the shape of Jamie Lannister's severed hand at one of the city's most famous ice cream parlours, Rocambolesc.
There were many more series and films filmed in the city, so if you're a film buff, there's yet another reason to visit Girona.

And one of the best extras of the getaway we suggest: the spectacular beaches! Without a doubt, the best way to end the trip is to spend a few more days on the Catalan coast. You can visit Begur, Tamariu, Calella de Palafrugell or Palamós. All beautiful villages with streets you'll fall in love with and beaches where you can spend hours lying and marvelling at the blue.
