Catalan gastronomy: your definitive route

Continuing with another of the best cuisines in Spain. This time we move to the northwest of the country with Catalonia and the definitive route of its Catalan gastronomy.
Catalonia has sea, mountains, orchards, so all this will be reflected in its gastronomy. Surely this is going to be a first part because Catalan gastronomy has a lot to offer!

Pa amb tomàquet

We begin this list with something simple, but one of the most appreciated and unique dishes in Catalonia: pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato). Yes, bread with tomato, just as it is. The differences are, ideally, that the bread is pa de pagés or farmer’s bread, cut the tomato in half and spread it on the bread. Then add a little salt and oil, and that's it, enjoy!
Something that Catalans miss as soon as they leave Catalonia is pa amb tomàquet, a dish which, as you have seen, is very simple, but which can accompany every meal of the day.

Calçots

Now that we are in season and until April, another of the most unique dishes of Catalan gastronomy that could not be missing in this definitive route. It is a vegetable that comes from a variety of spring onion, they are elongated and can be baked or barbecued. You have to wait until it is all black, then the skin is removed, it is dipped in the calçots sauce, which is very similar to romescu sauce, and, get ready for more!

Mel i mató

This list could not be without a sweet dish, so we will end it with two of the most famous. One of the most classic Catalan desserts is mel i mató. It is a fresh cheese similar to ricotta cheese with medieval origins that is covered with honey and the result is a very simple but delicious dessert.

Crema catalana

Another dessert that makes us salivate just thinking about it, surely the quintessential Catalan dessert. It is a cream made mainly with eggs, milk, sugar, and flour, served with burnt sugar on top, which gives it a hard layer. This layer must be broken in order to be able to taste the cream. The crema catalana is served in special casseroles that make it even more special, and you can't imagine it without it.
